The 2016 Volkswagen Touran

Volkswagen was incredibly affected by the scandal about the alterations of the real emission rates of several cars in its lineup. The crisis was so bad, that the value of company plummeted. For such an irresponsible practice, a lot of people lost their faith in this brand, in its best economic moment, when Volkswagen was selling a lot and earning money like a few.

That scandal has settled down now. Volkswagen is trying to reclaim that fame it temporarily had. Possibly it will take years, even decades. The new and refreshed version of the 2016 Touran is here to make a little contribution, trying to help a brand in trouble.

Unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March the revamped model has some traits alike the new Passat and Golf SV and set itself between the Golf SV and Sharan. It looks like a small minivan or tall-wagon. With a modern look and a scalable MQB layout, it’s intended to take advantage of that “SUV fever” that it’s taking place all around the world.

Due to the success of this car, few aesthetical changes has been implemented. Most of them are just minimal touches. The same happens with the Golf model, receiving subtle changes.

Among those changes features a larger and wider chassis, but with some diet plan, this car has cut over 136 pounds. Also, a lot of enhancements in terms of aerodynamics, cargo capacity, comfortableness, and security are present.

Let’s review this German car.

Powertrain and Performance

This car has tons of engine’s option, three of petrol and three of diesel. Let’s see them in detail, starting with the entry-level powerplant.

  • 1.2L TDL turbocharged delivering 148 horsepower.
  • 1.4L TSI diesel delivering 147 horsepower.
  • 1.6 TDI petrol delivering 108 horsepower.
  • 1.8 TSI diesel delivering 174 horsepower.
  • 2.0 TDI petrol delivering 147 horsepower.
  • 2.0L TSI diesel model with 187 horsepower.

The 2.0L diesel will come exclusively with an automatic gearbox, optional on all other engines. Volkswagen also said that the fuel economy will be 19 percent better thanks, to the reduction in weight of 137 pounds.

Design Line and Interior

The exterior of the 2016 Touran is sharper and more solid than in years before. The front fascia is all the way Volkswagen. Seriously, you’ll know that is a Volkswagen from miles away. The LED headlights are rectangular with a nice shape, and the grille remains the same as almost any Volkswagen with three horizontal lines. Underneath it, there are the fog headlights, pretty big along with those black air intakes.

If you look at it sideways, is a non-aesthetic car at all. The intended use of the car is not being attractive, but is ugly and has a pretty undesirable shape. The same happens with that rear, which is boring and doesn’t emanate any kind of beauty.

The interior is roomy as a few, and that increased the height in the chassis. The cockpit is similar to the one of the Golf model with the exact same instrument cluster and steering wheel. The general cockpit gets a more stylish interior and a more premium feel.

Amenities like hands-free trunk open, tri-zone climate control, and even an amplifier for the people in the last row are also present. The interior packages plenty of safety features like automatic post-collision braking assistant as standard, adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking and pre-crash proactive occupant protection.

The Bottom Line

The 2016 Touran is a family SUV without any sport or sexy aesthetic intentions. It’s an extremely comfortable car with excellent fuel efficiency but isn’t attractive at all. This lack of excitement is always a problem.

Starting price at US$25.000.
