The 2016 Ford Falcon XR Sprint

While this is a pretty isolated model from Ford, we can’t really understand why that is. The Ford Falcon is one of the most interesting models of the American car company but it is only available in Australia and New Zealand. We all know that Australians are die-hard car enthusiasts. They have a unique automotive culture to envy. Maybe that’s why Ford decided to give them the Falcon as a prize.

The base Falcon released during the previous decade was an undisputed success in sales. The customers from Australia love them and, in an instant, they make it the people’s favorite vehicle. What have we? A really powerful and agile sedan with an always good-looking appearance. Do not forget its incredible handling and the premium feeling it delivers.

Now, Ford is preparing the final run for its Australian best-seller. The 2016 Falcon XR Sprint will be the most hardcore version of the Falcon ever made by Ford, delivering the last taste to the Australians of what they are going to miss. A lot.

Let’s take a further look of the Falcon XR Sprint, an Australia-exclusive exemplary car.

Powertrain and Specs

First, you must know that the return of the Sprint badge is accompanied by two different variants of the XR. First, we have the XR6 Turbo Sprint, which will feature a massive turbocharged 4.0 L 6-cylinder, totally capable of generating up to 436 hp at 6000 RPM and a maximum torque of 425 lb-ft. Also, drivers are going to have at hand the Overboost mode that will cause 10 seconds of violence, increasing power up to 496 hp and 479 lb-ft.

The XR6 Turbo Sprint will also enjoy other interesting features like a huge intercooler, high-performance FPV F6 turbo and injectors, upgraded design for a better air intake, among others. This version will come with a 6-speed automatic transmission, with no option for a manual one.

Then, the XR8 Sprint is going to kill it. If you thought that you had enough with the 4.0 turbo, the supercharged 5.0 L V8 onboard of the XR8 is going to blow your mind. The total power output is rated at 463 hp at 5750 RPM with a maximum torque of 424 lb-ft at 2200 RPM. Now, the same Overboost mode on the XR6 Turbo Sprint is going to push the boundaries of the XR8, taking the numbers up to 536 hp and 479 lb-ft for 10 seconds. This brutal variant will also enjoy from both options in terms of transmissions, an automatic and a manual.

Even the braking is hardcore on the Falcon XR. This car is getting a Brembo setup, having six-piston calipers work in the front end and four-piston calipers in the rear. Also, both variants will feature Launch control, thanks to the ZF Sachs automatic gearbox than comes mandatory with the XR6 Turbo Sprint and optional on the XR8.

Appearance and Brawny Look

The last-generation Falcon features a bold look with a totally aggressive stance. It is, by far, one of the best-looking vehicles ever designed by Ford. We, at Up and Coming Cars, can’t understand how this model isn’t present in all the markets… Anyway, the Falcon XR Sprint is getting a heavy use of carbon fiber in order to cut some weight.

The front fog lights, bezels, wheels, badges, and exclusive detailing are present both in the exterior and interior of these two variants. The visual difference is small between the two, fortunately. Inside the cockpit, things are more conservative, leaving the action and sex-appeal to the exterior design.

The Bottom Line

The highly-limited 2016 Falcon XR Sprint with its two versions, the XR6 Turbo Sprint and the XR8 Sprint, are going to leave a joyful memory to all those lucky Australians. This is one of the most exciting vehicles made by Ford, oddly, leaving it exclusive for a single market.

The XR6 Turbo Sprint starts at AU$54.990 (US$39.744) and the XR8 Sprint starts at AU$59.990 (US$43.358).
