The S90 brand is back and Volvo is planning to make it one big reference in the world of luxurious cars. The 2017 S90 is more than that. The safety specialist reinvented the model and now is directly competing with strong bets coming from BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

With some details, we already can see how the 2017 S90 is going to be a strong play in the mid-size luxury sedans. It could lack power, but plenty of innovating toys and comfort is waiting inside.

Let’s see some of the highlights of this revamped Volvo.

Wide Setups for the 2017 S90

There are going to be a wide range of engines available for the 2017 S90. All of these are 2.0 L 4-inline motors, but the specs will slightly change. The engine will be denominated as T6, T5, D4, D5 and T8, all depending on the fuel setup. These will be available according to the markets in question. For example, US market will not have the same engines than the European one.

In numbers, the T5 is a turbocharged gasoline engine that would produce up to 254 hp and a maximum torque of 258 lb-ft. The T6 engine is also gasoline-based, but it will be a little more powerful, equipped with both turbocharger and supercharger. The last one would generate 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of max torque.

The D4 and D5 setups correspond to the diesel engines. And lastly, the T8 engine available will be hybrid. It’s important to mention that the engine will be the same as the one mounted on the XC90 SUV.

There are scarce information about the 2017 S90, mainly in terms of performance. On the Internet, some data is rolling but isn’t quite official. In this matter, the estimated time of the 2017 S90 going from standstill to 60 mph (100 km/h) is 6 seconds. Equally, the estimated top speed is around 155 mph (249 km/h).

Now, in terms of transmission, there are going to be two gearboxes available. A 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic will be offered mounted on the 2017 S90.

Based on the engines available, its main rivals would be German mid-size luxury sedans. The main disadvantage for the 2017 S90 could be the lack of 6 and 8-cylinder engines.

Beautiful, Luxurious Design

Volvo is making great efforts in terms of design. The actual design is greatly similar to the one of the XC90 SUV. The elegant shape is now the face of the brand.

We found a wide air intake below the front bumper. The LED headlights are highly appealing and extremely refined. Most of this new design is renewed (or based in the renewed XC90) and has few traces of its predecessors.

The mid-size sedan will offer a polished design, both in the exterior and the interior. When we arrive at the cabin, the 2017 S90 shows a highly luxurious cabin. Plenty of wood inserts, mainly seen in the distinguished dashboard, make a great difference.

Again, more of the XC90 SUV can be seen and recognized inside the 2017 S90 cockpit. Every material used on board feels premium and top-notch. There isn’t a lack of quality and comfort in any way.

The Sensus Connect touchscreen allows the central console to be minimalistic and have an enormous sense of style. There is cutting-edge technology in the interior, both in terms of comfort and safety. As expected in a Volvo, there are plenty of safety mechanism presents. From handling assistants to highly efficient airbags.

The Bottom Line

The 2017 S90 will hit the market in the last half of the 2016. So, there is plenty of information to be announced in the following months. By now, we have an estimated price tag around the US$45.000 for the base model.
