Is the 2016 CT6 the avant-garde shot for getting back the glory to Cadillac? It could be. This sexy, full-size luxury sedan is entering the producing phase in the upcoming months. Main rivals? German beast and the highly-expected Lincoln Continental, which is getting out of the concept stage.
This beautifully-crafted sedan is more than elegance. The opulence it shows has no limits. Don’t be confused, this isn’t a Rolls-Royce. The 2016 CT6 is way more affordable than a Bentley or a Rolls, but it is planning to deliver a maximum comfort experience.
Let’s get familiar with the biggest features of this upcoming Cadillac.
Engine and Specs
The highly anticipated 2016 CT6 will feature, in its most basic variant, a turbocharged 2.0 L inline-4 with an 8-speed automatic HydraMatic 8L45 transmission. This engine will be capable of producing 265 hp and will have an estimated acceleration of 0-60 mph (100 km/h) in 6.5 seconds. For the top speed, is being speculated an electronically limited 155 mph (249 km/h).
There are also going to be other setups for this full-size luxury sedan. Future buyers will be able to choose between a DOHC DI 3.6 L V6 that will generate 335 hp, and a twin-turbo DOHC DI 3.0 L V6 paired with an improved 8-speed HydraMatic 8L90 transmission. The twin-turbo power plant will generate up to 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of maximum torque.
The cylinder deactivation will be available for improved fuel consumption. The smart AWD system onboard only provides power to the axles when they require it. Among other impressive, cutting-edge technologies, the 2016 CT6 features Magnetic Ride Control and Active Rear Steer. The last one is often used by other carmakers, but, in this case, this is the first time Cadillac is using it.
Lavish, Avant-Garde Design
The 2016 CT6 is slightly based on the design proposed by the Elmiraj Concept. Despite this clear fact, GM stated that the actual design is more like an elegant progression than a second-hand product.
This Cadillac won’t discard the distinctive dash-to-axle ratio, always a characteristic of this luxury carmaker. The main design is composed by several hard, bold lines, just like other recent models.
In the interior is where the 2016 CT6 excels. Abundant opulence is granted, thanks to a sane excess of top-quality materials. A huge storage console in the center is found. There is a 10.2-inch touchscreen display in the center of the dashboard. From there, every operation related to the toys onboard can be executed. Another one is located at the instrument cluster space.
But, if you don’t want to use any one of these touchscreens, you can just use the touchpad installed in the armrest. Comfort at its best.
The night-vision-capable cameras are installed all around the vehicle, allowing constant monitoring of possible near objects, including animals and people. The interior mirror is no longer a simple, common mirror. Now we find a screen projecting what the rear camera watches. The 2016 CT6 will also feature a quad-zone climate control and a 34-speaker Bose premium audio system, delivering the crispier musical experiences on the ride.
The Bottom Line
The 2016 CT6 is a strong bet from Cadillac, but success isn’t granted yet. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class looks quite superior, which is the CT6’s main rival on the segment. The German full-size sedan packs a way more powerful engine and represents the main reference for affordable luxury and comfort.
The 3.6 L V6 with AWD traction start at US$55.495, while the twin-turbo 3.6 L V6, also with AWD capabilities, is going to cost a minimum of US$64.395. Many upgrade packages are going to be available.
