These are good days for Honda’s fanboys. The 2017 Civic Type R, which we already talked before here, at Up and Coming Cars, is going to hit the market very soon and there is no one who isn’t excited about.
Now, the latest news about this affordable super-beast is that it just dethroned the Golf GTI Clubsport S as the fastest FWD production vehicle in Nürburgring’s terms. The Green Hell, as many like to call this legendary track, faced the street-racer Honda and lose.
The Fastest Lap, By a Lot
According to Honda, the 2017 Civic Type R just lapped Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:43.80. This 12.9-mile circuit was lapped by the previously mentioned Golf GTI Clubsport S in 7:47.19, which is 3.39 slower in comparison with the new record set. Volkswagen accomplished this on October, so they had little time to celebrate it.
Another interesting thing to know about previous lap leaders is that before the Golf GTI Clubsport S, the fastest FWD on Nürburgring was the last Civic Type R, the one being sold in European markets.
What We Don’t Like About this News
There is something, however, that may not seem fair at all. It’s true that Nürburgring gave this prestigious title to the 2017 Civic Type R already. Nevertheless, it wasn’t a totally fair competition.
The unit that lapped had Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2, instead of the production’s Continental ContiSportContact 6. Also, it featured a racing-degree roll cage and had removed the infotainment display and rear seats to decrease weight.
Detractors will have a lot to talk about and use against the Civic’s new achievement. It’s hard to tell.
