The 2018 Jaguar XE


During the last few years, Jaguar has been doing a massive effort to empower its entire lineup. At Up and Coming Cars, we have been looking this development closely, talking on many occasions about the different releases. One thing we noticed is that every single launch wants to make look its predecessor like a very outdated version of the same vehicle. This carmaker fills every development with a lot of new features, something we appreciate a lot.

The 2018 XE is another case of this behavior. Jaguar filled this fresh compact sports sedan with remarkable new features we are going to review today. The looks remain almost the same but for the rest of the vehicle, we get plenty of novelties. Have in consideration the tough competition that this sedan has: Audi A4, Mercedes C-class, Alfa Romeo Giulia, and a few BMW best-selling models.

But what are we getting exactly with the 2018 Jaguar XE? Let’s take a look.

Power Under the Hood

The 2018 XE will not be the fastest, angrier vehicle of the lineup. Instead, we are getting a quite sporty sedan that brings the best of both worlds and it does it without going beyond US$40,000, at least for the base trim.

For this updated version, Jaguar is adding a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to replace the old one on the 25t trim level. This is one of the most relevant updates we get. This gasoline powerplant will generate up to 247 horsepower and a maximum torque of 269 lb-ft. Here, Ingenium’s new standard played an important role.

There is also a turbo-diesel inline-four that is also present on the 2017 model. On the new V-6 models, the basic powerplant will generate up to 380 horsepower, which isn’t a small number for an affordable sedan.

To complete the setup on the 2018 XE, we get an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard, with other possible options that are about to be announced. The sedan will have a rear-wheel-drive layout as standard with all-wheel-drive available as an option.

Still Elegant and Comfortable

Visually, changes are hard to identify. The 2018 XE is more focused on the improvements within. In this sense, only die-hard fans of Jaguar will see significant differences. At the rear end, hands-free power trunk lid comes as a novelty for this revision, only to give an example. Another techy addition is the updated surround-camera parking options, adding multiple new features.

Inside, amenities are abundant. For example, the 35t Portfolio trim level will include, as standard, a premium Meridian sound system and both heated and cooled front seats. There is a brand-new digital gauge cluster display as well, promoted as one of the leading updates.

The Bottom Line

The 2018 Jaguar XE is a shy yet notable upgrade for a model that was doing things well in its segment. Premium, Prestige, R-Sport, and S are among the many trim levels. The dynamic offer is something to remark.

The base 24t trim comes with a slight increase in its price, in comparison with last year model, almost hitting the US$36,000-mark.
