The Smart Fortwo is a relatively new car while launched 18 years ago. So, in a few words, this car is a baby, not only in its size, in history as well. The fact that a car is small and sluggish as a turtle blended with a slug, it doesn’t mean that hasn’t an opportunity with some potential customers. Thus, a lot of people won’t believe that this cute car has sold over 1.7 millions of units early in 2015. The 2017 Smart Fortwo Cabriolet is not that “smart” exactly. The name is the combination between Swatch and Mercedes (both developed the car), and yes, such a brilliant idea of fill up every segment of cars. Thanks, Mercedes.
Basically, the differences between the Fortwo Cabriolet and the standard Fortwo is the lack of a roof, also, the new Fortwo Cabriolet has been refreshed with new generation features that offer a sharply aesthetic with a modern look.
The tiny car is convenient for a city ride, even more in crowdie cities. Who doesn’t like to be able to park your car in any minimal space. At least for us, is an excellent idea.
Let’s review this interesting car.
Powertrain and Performance
This third generation of Smart Fortwo is offered with two petrol engines options: a 1.0 L three-cylinder engine delivering 71 hp and 67lb-ft of torque at 1000 rpm. The another one is a turbocharged 0.9 L producing 89hp and 100 lb-ft (finally, three digits). All engines come with either a manual five-speed gearbox or an automatic dual clutch transmission.
Here comes the tough thing to say: the 71 horsepower engine launch the Smart Fortwo from standstill to 60 mph in sloppy 14.9 seconds and reach a top speed at 94 mph. Meanwhile, to relief the lack of speed, the seconds engine delivering 89 horsepower can launch the tiny car from standstill to 60 mph in 10.8 seconds and reaching a top speed that goes to 96 mph. Much better.
Something incredible for the fuel efficiency of the car is the automatic start/stop system, which function is to shut down the engine when the vehicle is in repose. Conveniently, it can be disabled manually via a switch. The fuel economy for this car is not as good as expected, packing such a weak engine and tiny chassis, the fuel economy should be the best of the market, but the rates settle on 33 mpg in city and 39 mpg in a highway.
Design Line and Interior
The 2017 Fortwo Cabriolet is an interesting car to review. Due in the convenient of the potential customers, we are going to be as subjective as we can. The car is tiny and delivers a really weak and non-sexy feeling. It’s true. Perhaps, we are so used to high-end super sports cars that a different car like will let us a little bit overwhelmed. Sincerely, the car is cute and has a really dynamic and futuristic design, but is not a car that will pass and your jaw will drop off to the ground. It’s not a traumatic experience to see it in the streets while definitely is fun to watch for its eccentric design.
Relating the exterior with the interior is valid. The room inside the car is minimal, but enough for two adults. The overall interior sensation is incredible and the design and style of the center console and every single detail differentiates it from any other car.
The Bottom Line for the Fortwo
The 2017 Fortwo Cabriolet is an excellent choice if your preferences are for a really compact, tiny car with good, but not excellent fuel efficiency. You can be the center of attention in the city as well. A good price-value car at the end.
Starting price at US$15.400.
