For many years, American customers have been waiting for a new release of the Type R brand in the market. A few versions were released in other regions with Honda constantly ignoring the North American market. But this is about to change.
During the recent 2017 Geneva Auto Show, Honda decided to finally announce their 2017 Civic Type R for the American market. Have in consideration that this will be the second Type R model for this market in the entire Honda history.
And what we knew during the presentation? Enough to give nightmares to Ford and Volkswagen, the carmakers that are going to directly compete with this model. The 2017 Civic Type R presents itself as the ultimate street machine for boys on a relative budget.
Let’s take a look.
Mechanics for Speed
The 2017 Civic Type R will feature a VTEC turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four powerplant with direct injection. This intimidating engine will be capable of generating up to 306 horsepower at 6500 RPM and 295 lb-ft at 2500 RPM.
To complete the setup, Honda is adding a 6-speed manual gearbox with automatic rev-matching, which is going to be the only transmission available. Also, the 2017 Civic Type R will come exclusively in a front-wheel drive layout.
Other important additions are the structural bracing and superb tuning for the springs, dampers, and bushings. The limited-slip differential comes as standard, which is great for the value.
Comfort, Sport, and +R are the three different driving modes available. These modes will be responsible for modifying the way dampers, steering, throttle, rev-matching capabilities, and stability control perform.
Standard Brembo calipers oversee the stopping power along with cross-drilled 13.8-inch rotors in the front and solid 12-inch rotors in the rear. Making serious contact with the asphalt, we get 245/30 Continental SportContact 6 summer tires, which come as standard. For hungrier customers, they can have a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 instead, by paying the extra price.
A Violent Approach
This can easily be the most aggressive Civic we have ever seen. Its spiky design, abundant in hard edges, the 2017 Civic Type R will be hard to ignore on the streets.
What we have is the modern Civic design pattern with hardcore retouches and detailing. The splitters are present all around, every single inch of them with red accenting. In the front, the aluminum hood has a massive air intake that isn’t only for decorative purposes.
From a side, we see how the hatchback form makes the 2017 Civic Type R extremely aerodynamic and athletic in its own way, without having any valid comparisons. The 20-inch wheels are simply astonishing with their black finish.
At the back, the Civic’s signature taillights are still there, along with a colossal wing. The rear end is completed by a triple center-mounted exhaust that cannot look better.
Once we get to the cabin, the red accents continue. Faux carbon-fiber trimming inside complete the dash. Among the included amenities, we find full multimedia capabilities with a 12-speaker audio system and Apple CarPlay/Android compatibility.
The Bottom Line
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R for the American market is one of the most exciting car releases in recent years. This model represents the “need for speed” spirit in the young ones.
While the official price hasn’t been announced yet, we can expect it around US$35,000.
