The 2016 Geneva Auto Show from the past month was the place Honda chose to finally exhibit the new Civic. But against all odds, what this Japanese car maker did was announcing a new concept. The difference, in this case, is that Honda is claiming that the Civic Hatchback Concept will be extremely similar to the final version which is going to be released next year.
If that’s true, we are going to get a really exciting compact. What we see is an aggressive hatchback with a jaw-dropping design. Honda knew that we were expecting something like this, a vehicle to describe with “fierce”, “violent”, and “avant-garde”.
Also, notice that we are seeing a base model, not a Type R one. This fact makes us dream about a track-ready Civic in a couple of years, delivering an even more belligerent appearance and a highly powerful setup. Either way, Honda is bringing the new generation of an eternal vehicle.
Let’s take a close look of the new Civic Hatchback.
Drivetrain and Specs
At this point, there are a few things to say about the 2017 Civic Hatchback. First, as usual for Honda vehicles, are drivetrain will greatly vary depending the market. During the Geneva show last month, major details about the specs weren’t released to the public. Despite this, we can perfectly assume that the model coming to the U.S. market will feature a turbocharged 2.0 L 4-cylinder powerplant. The estimated power output will be around 300 hp with this engine.
In terms of transmission, the specialized media is already counting with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The way it looks, it’s hard to imagine with an automatic transmission. Of course, you will have the chance to choose one, if that is your boring desire.
The base model of the 2017 Civic Hatchback will have a front-wheel-drive setup, maybe reserving the AWD layout for the more hardcore version already mentioned. Beside this little facts, there is little to talk about specs. The long list of these details will be announced close to the end of this year.

Stunning Looks and Stance
For those who knows some about Civic models, you may think that this new presentation seems too much like a Type R. At Up and Coming Car, we thought the same thing. This new Civic Hatchback enjoys an overdose of excitement and sportiness.
In the front, an aggressive design is ruling from the hood to the end of the bumper, which emulates a sexy, black-finish splitter. The slim LED headlights clearly come from the future and the black honeycomb grille in the bumper below is full of sharp edges. As we see, the black is important.
From a side, blade-like spokes resemble the massive wheels, wrapped with low-profile tires. The yellow calipers beyond the wheels catch our attention immediately. The hard lines that go from one end to another make seem the 2017 Civic Hatchback as a truly aerodynamic vehicle.
When we get to the rear fascia, it is hard to tell. Honda is trying to deliver an astonishing design like no other. This way, this car maker is making things right but some may say that it is ugly. At least, we don’t. The amazing taillights are the first thing we see, being huge. Below, the same mesh grille is found on both sides. The twin exhaust pipe is well located in the center of a black-finish diffuser.
The Bottom Line
The 2017 Civic Hatchback announced during the Geneva Auto Show is a proof that Honda is making things right. It gets confusing when we thing in the upcoming variants and trims. Is this the Type R or just the base model? It looks too hardcore for being the basic presentation.
The price isn’t announced yet.
