The 2016 Prius was presented a couple months ago in Frankfurt. It’s still not on sale, but for those who likes a car with a supreme efficiency, the Prius their bet. Prius can show off that is one of the best cars in efficiency’s rankings, having sold over 3.5 million unit around the globe. As a hybrid car with a petrol engine and another electric, expect a huge save in gas, which is normal on these cars, and the Prius in particular -already famous for having great efficiency- is going to improve, due to the Japanese maker has enhanced its consumption in 18%. The impressive efficiency is possible thanks to a redesigned hybrid system and the airfoil as well.
The new 2016 Prius could integrate a new platform called TNGA (Toyota’s New Global Architecture), enhancing the gravity center and sensitive suspension, offering a fun drive experience. In safety aspects, Toyota has included features that are present in the vast majority of recent and upcoming cars, called Toyota Safety Sense, which is the responsible of delivering trends as pre-collision warning with pedestrian avoidance, lane departure, radar cruise control and automatic high-beams.
Let’s review this car in deep.
Performance and Eco-friendly Efficiency
The engine powered by petrol is the same as the previous Prius, with 1.8L DOHC VVT-i 4-cylinder and 98 hp (1 hp less than the predecessor), with variable distribution and with Atkinson’s cycle. As a novelty, the 2016 Prius may have changes that will increase the thermal performance from 38.5% to 40%.
The electric engine and the generator are smaller and lighter than ever. With a 72 hp (10 hp less than the previous Prius) completes the heart of this car with a total power of 122 hp (12 less than the outgoing model). It sounds like this year, the 2016 Prius is going to be sluggish, but the performance is going to be the same. The fuel economy would rise to 55 mpg, excellent as usual.
People always underrated the hybrid’s speed, and it is true, they are not as fast as we want it to be, but the Prius can accelerate standstill to 60 mph in 10.6 seconds. That’s not exactly a ‘fast’ car, but fusing it with the incredible fuel economy is a positive point.
Design Lines and Interior
The 2016 Prius doesn’t look as an impressive car in terms of design. Its a floppy and odd exterior. Everyone has expected better efforts or, at least, a different approach of a sales-hit car. Hopefully, this design won’t be a setback for this awesome car because it looks futuristic and innovative in such a weird way. With accentuated head and fog LED lights, elongated design, and lower roofline, the car delivers an undeniable last-model car sensation but reminds the Pontiac Aztek and Walter White driving through Albuquerque.
The 2016 Prius would incorporate a new platform, TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture). It would be solid and with more high-quality steel, offering more protection in case of impact. The rear suspension is now deformable parallelogram instead of spins wheels connected by a torsion shaft. An advantage that deliver more space and enhance the trunk room.
The interior looks incredible and roomy, with solid and interesting colors. With cutting-edge technology features, the 2016 Prius is promising. Simple Intelligent Park Assist (SIPA) would be available in this release, which consist in applying the correct steering inputs during a parking maneuver as well as moving the car while the driver controls the brakes.
The Bottom Line for the Prius
The 2016 Prius has been a giant among the hybrid cars, even with a strange exterior design, the fuel efficiency and the well-known quality of Toyota make this car affordable to have it for years.
If you don’t care too much about the exterior and want to sacrifice some aesthetics for efficiency, durability and tech, this car is your bet, with a starting price at US$25.035.
