The 2015 Dubai International Auto Show was the opportunity for McLaren to settle in the Middle East market with the presentation of three customized models. The McLaren 570S, the McLaren P1, and the McLaren 650S Spider Al Sahara 79 by MSO. This customized 650S is exclusively aimed to the royal and faithful Middle East market, well known for its eccentricities, opulence, and luxury. All these facts make that McLaren use its special department the McLaren Special Operations (MSO). This department is the responsible of the company that builds customized cars from the McLaren’s repertory.
If you are wealthy enough, you can ask for something not offered in the McLaren catalog. This time, the creation by McLaren is the car called 650S Spider Al Sahara 79, a customizable model of its already famous 650S model. The car exhibit a special paint option called pearlescent white gold, but the eccentricity doesn’t end there. It has real 24K gold particles in the paint to get a shinning and wealthy attention. Something well received in Dubai.
Let’s review this Middle East’s sensation.
Powertrain and Performance
Mechanical aspects weren’t touched by MSO or McLaren at all. Instead, they trust on its detuned and multi-awarded mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.8 L V8 engine, found in the 650S Coupe and 650S Spider. The engine produces 641 hp at 7250 rpm and 500 lb-ft or torque. The acceleration is still one of the fastest in the market, going from standstill to 60 mph in just 3 seconds and reaching a top speed that goes up to 204 mph. It comes paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission that drives the rear wheels. Breaking is pretty good too. Its carbon ceramic rotors stop the car from the 186 mph in just 896 feet.
Design Line and Interior
The beauty and grandness of the 650S by itself is impressive. The standard 650S has a silhouette easily recognizable, and it’s just pure joy when staring at it. A well consolidated front fascia is evident and the sporty, luxury and aggressive look on this car is undeniable. Blended to this success is an exclusive and striking paintwork. The white gold pearlescent with black detailing is incredibly hot, and make me want to assault a bank in order to get one of these. The opulent and wealthy stance of this car is well addressed to the Middle East Market. The retractable hard top and lightweight forged alloy wheels in gloss black look quite sexy and audacious. Carbon fiber is used in front splitter, side intakes, and rear diffuser.
The interior thrives with the same concept of the exterior. Pearlescent white gold and gloss black anywhere with gold details spread all over the cockpit. The steering wheel is hot as hell with that black leather and white paint with gold painted details in the middle. The knobs and buttons on the center console and the knob for the infotainment system, the dash vents, and the rotatory controls on the door panel have been painted in dark gold. The instrument cluster is surrounded by carbon fiber accents, and the display screen for the infotainment system is the same from the standard 650S. The seats are comfortable and sporty, with electrically adjustable with black and almond white leather.
The Bottom Line
McLaren is full of successful cars in its repertory, but the fact that the 2016 McLaren 650S Spider Al Sahara 79 By MSO is only available in the Middle East market, and it doesn’t mean that this car is not going to be a successful model. This 650S, with its pearlescent white paint with24k gold particles, is expensive. Way more than the standard 650S.
Starting price at US$396.00.
