The 2016 IS200t F Sport is the new shot of the Japanese luxury maker to hit the market with a high-performance sedan that actually works. This segment is full of impressive best, most of them coming from Germany. So, the competence is really tough.
Changes are big, beginning with the engine onboard. Lexus decided to go with a smaller but yet more powerful power plant, throwing more efficient and satisfying numbers. Despite all these changes and a bulky price tag, the performance remains improper.
Let’s take a further look for the 2016 IS200t F Sport.
Powertrain and Specs
The 2016 IS200t F Sport packs a turbocharged intercooled DOHC 16-valve 2.0 L inline-4 power plant, which is replacing a massive V6 from past model. This new engine is capable of delivering 241 hp at 5800 RPM and 258 lb-ft of maximum torque at 1650 RPM. This is one of the most critically acclaimed changes for this new year’ IS200t.
But now, the flaws begin. Along with this truly surprising engine, there is an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting. According to the specialized media, this gearbox isn’t good enough. The performance numbers are the following. For 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) times, 6.8 seconds looks really sad. In the other hand, the top speed is around 143 mph (230 km/h). German rivals can laugh now.
In terms of fuel economy, we get 22 mpg for the city and 33 mpg for the highway. The flaws in performance can be attributed to the curb weight, which is 3717 lb (1686 kg). Recently here, at Up and Coming Cars, we review a heavyweight sports car from Lexus, delivering pitiful times. So, we assume that the Japanese luxury maker doesn’t care that much when it comes about weight.
The steering and handling, fortunately, are supreme, while the manual transmission feels necessary to exploit full potential. Both suspension and chassis are highly tuned as a sports car. For the F Sport trim, we only can get a rear-wheel drive configuration. The 2016 IS200t F Sport gets double wishbone suspension in the front end and a multi-link layout in the rear.
Luxury and Design
Despite all flaws mentioned previously, the 2016 IS200t F Sport is a really sexy sedan. The front fascia feature, as expected, the enormous, vertical grille with a black finish. Notice that this front end’s design is equally hated and loved by many. Then we see an edgy, almost violent bumper with two discrete air intakes at each extreme.
The Lexus’ distinctive L-shaped LED lights below the main headlights are an always appreciated, as a unique trend of the design. The rest of the sedan, on the contrary, is pretty ordinary and common. As expected from the luxury maker, the cabin offers plenty of comfort features. This is a luxury sedan over all the other specs and items. The ride experience is totally silent and quiet.
The 5-passenger interior capacity offers enough space for a comfortable and pleasant experience, even for adults. Upgraded features like the navigation platform, premium 8-speaker audio setup, heated steering wheel, enhanced safety technologies, and many other are included in the F Sport trim, which represents an important improvement from the base IS200t.
The Bottom Line
The 2016 IS200t F Sport is a great upgrade from the past model. Despite this great achievement, there are too many things to fix. In a segment with competitors like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, is necessary to excel and deliver the maximum quality possible.
Expect a price tag around US$41.810.
