The SUV niche seems to be impossible to satisfy. Hundreds of incredible SUVs are available right now but only a few have the breed of a Jeep. Incredible, big utility vehicles that are specialized in dominating every road of snow or mud gets owned by Jeep. The iconic and well-known Grand Cherokee is one of the best out there, incorporating upscale materials and tons of technology features.
Aesthetically, the Grand Cherokee is in its fourth generation and it’s kicking serious asses. It has an aggressive look and off-road capabilities but at the same time, a luxurious presence that wouldn’t be easy to ignore. Is not definitely a boring design. Instead, it’s an athletic vehicle for young people.
The driving experience is probably one of the best out there. The exhilarating performance with a quiet and comfortable ride, along with an enviable sense of stability in turns are amazing. The points mentioned above doesn’t include the extraordinary off-road skills of this SUV. The 2016 Grand Cherokee is on the top of the pinnacle, thanks to its four-wheel-drive system and powerful engine setups.
Let’s review this successful SUV.
Powertrain and Performance
Every Grand Cherokee except for the SRT comes standard with a 3.6 L V6 producing 295 horsepower and 256 lb-ft of torque. Although, Limited, Overland, and Summit models are also available with either a 5.7 L V8 or a turbocharged diesel 3.0 L V6. The 5.7 L V8 engine delivers 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the 3.0 L diesel produces 240 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
Jeep offers an exclusive version which isn’t an off-road trim. The SRT trim comes with a 6.4 L V8, producing 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Who says that a Grand Cherokee cannot be fast? The SRT comes standard with a tuned all-wheel-drive system for high-performance driving rather than off-road use. The acceleration is exhilarating for such a heavy SUV, going from standstill to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds.
All engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the rear-wheel-drive is standard in every trim except for the SRT. There is also available a 4WD system, single speed light-duty Quadra-Trac I System (Laredo trim), a Quadra-Trac II with a two-speed transfer case (Summit, Overland, and Limited), and a Quadra-Trac II with the two-speed transfer case (Limited, Overland, and Summit). In some trims, there is also available an adaptive air suspension called Quadra-Lift and a driver-selectable traction control.
The towing capacity is quite good while the V6 gasoline tows up to 6.200 pounds. V8 and V6 diesel tow up to 7.400 pounds.
Exterior Design and Cabin
The 2016 Grand Cherokee is designed to be an off-road vehicle without any lack of sportiness or luxury. The entire SUV is square with rounded and curved panels, which make it flow like a premium car. The front fascia is phenomenal while it’s intimidating and fiery. From sideways, the SUV has a distinctive silhouette with a unique styling. From the rear, the design is awesome and as usual, where the exhaust outlets on each side give a sporty look.
The cabin is incredibly premium, even on lower trim levels. The roomy and comfortable cabin is plagued with upscale soft materials and it’s evidently dominated by gadgets. The center stack can get either a 5-inch or an 8.4-inch touchscreen, both pretty easy to use. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter are top-notch and reaffirm the premium materials that Grand Cherokee enjoys. This Jeep SUV has no third-row seat option, something to consider when you have a family with more than five members.
The Bottom Line
If you want a visually striking SUV with exceptional off-road abilities, this is your bet. The 2016 Grand Cherokee is limited by the lack of a third-row seat, so it won’t be enough for a large family.
Plenty of technology features are equipped. Along with powerful and fast engines, the 2016 Grand Cherokee represents a unique and successful family SUV.
