The 2016 XJ is a really underrated beautiful and powerful full-size sedan. Most drivers ignore it in order to buy a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, which is in the same segment. Both opulent, luxurious and comfortable. One German and the other one British. But Jaguar is being beat up. What’s wrong.
This gorgeous sedan hasn’t a lack of power. The many engines available at each trim are all massive and have a powerful output. In terms of luxury, there is nothing to envy. Jaguar has to examine itself more often if they want their sedans get back the old days’ glory.

Engine and Specs
For the new 2016 XJ, Jaguar is offering two power plants. The first, equipped in the most elemental trims, is a supercharged, intercooled DOHC 24-valve 3.0 L V6, capable of producing 340 horsepower at 6500 RPM and 332 lb-ft of torque at 3500 RPM. For more expensive trims, there is an also supercharged, intercooled DOHC 32-valve 5.0 L V8. This last engine is capable of achieving an amount of horsepower between 470 and 550 while the maximum torque goes up between 424 and 502 lb-ft, all depending on the overall setup of the model selected.
For the transmission, the 2016 XJ gets an 8-speed automatic gearbox with manual shifting. This transmission paired with the most powerful engine available, the 5.0 L V8, launches this sedan from standstill to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds. The top speed with the same setup goes up 174 mph (280 km/h).

These are impressive numbers for a full-size sedan with a curb weight between 3900 (1769) and 4200 lb (1905). The electric power steering makes the driving experience too light and smooth, even beyond convenience for that anger under the hood. For the fuel efficiency, the 2016 XJ features 21 mpg combined, at least for the smaller engine.
The double wishbone suspension in both front and rear does a great job. In the rear, the 2016 XJ features an auto-leveling suspension for improved comfort. The braking power is provided by 4-wheel ABS with ventilated discs. A brake assist is also functioning there. Around those stopping instruments, Pirelli Zero Nero brands the tires, with P245/45 R19 in the front and P275/40 R19 in the back end.
Design and Comfort
Again, the 2016 XJ doesn’t have a lack of comfort and elegance. This is a worthy, really underrated competitor in the same segment of the all-mighty S-Class. The bold, brawny face of modern Jaguar models is really sophisticated and delicate in this model. Opulence is a necessity within this segment. The robust design delivers the right feeling.
It features minor visual changes in comparison with the past model, mainly in the front fascia, where the grille is now larger and the bumper’s air intakes had been redesigned. The LED headlights come as standard for all the variants available. With almost 206.9 inches (5.3 meters), the entire form seems majestic and could be easily perceived as a high-end luxury sedan. The 19-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels look pretty well, too.
Inside the cockpit, the InControl Touch Pro system onboard is in charge of the infotainment platform through an 8-inch display, which is really responsive thanks to its upgraded quad-core processor. A complete Navigation suite is present, full of cutting-edge features.
The 20-speaker Meridian 825W Premium Surround Sound system delivers a top-notch experience while traveling in the heated, cooled and ventilated front bucket seats. Plenty of technologies are operating onboard, as the expected ESC, blind-spot sensor, a rear collision sensor, and many other, which are included as standard.
