When you are wealthy enough to buy an opulent luxury sedan, you can notice that all of them offer almost the same capabilities. Flagship sedans have everything you might need, from an exhilarating performance to supreme comfort and numberless cutting-edge features.
Perhaps, by breed and reputation, the 2016 A8 is one of the best luxurious sedans in the market right now. It’s incredibly fast and with an incredible handling that doesn’t feel like a sedan. In terms of comfortableness, it couldn’t be better. Packed with the ultimate technology in terms of convenience items along with premium and comfortable seats. Upscale materials and top-tier build quality are mandatory. With such a bulky price tag is impossible not to get a premium car, wrapped with the latest stylish designs.
But the perfection doesn’t exist. The fuel efficiency is below-average and the small cargo capacity has established a boundary for long trips and the things you can carry in the A8.
Let’s review this astonishing German car.
German Engineering and Powerful Performance
The performance and versatility of this car are phenomenal. The standard engine is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6, producing 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The acceleration is incredible for a standard engine. The A8 goes from standstill to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds. The fuel efficiency settles at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which is a little bit disappointing.
The 2016 A8 also gets a less powerful engine but with with better efficiency. The diesel-powered A8 TDI uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 240 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Still, the A8’s diesel displacement is fast enough to launch the sedan from standstill to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. Meanwhile, the fuel efficiency is greatly improved, rated at 24 mpg in city and 36 on the highway.
Now, for speed maniacs, it is available a hardcore version. The A8 has a 4.0T trim level, adding a 4.0-liter V8 turbocharged engine producing 435 horsepower and 444 lb-ft of torque. The acceleration is almost like a sports supercar, going from standstill to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. The fuel efficiency is similar that the one found in the V6, rated at 18 mpg in city and 29 mpg on the highway.
All A8 trim levels are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that drives all four wheels through an all-wheel-drive system.
Exterior Styling and Interior
The problem with Audi is that not too many people are attracted to it due to its styling. Definitely, the Audi sedans don’t have the sportiest look but they are elegant and delivers a serious sensation of opulence.
The front fascia is sleek and features a huge grille. Those LED headlights along with the grille give a really intimidating feel and shows the A8’s opulence. From the rear, the design is elegant but ordinary. Fused exhaust pipes are remarkable at the rear bumper.
There are not enough adjectives to describe the flawless interior of the A8. In any trim level you can expect one of the best interiors of its segment. It’s plagued with upscale and top-notch materials. There is not a single flaw in the interior that could ruin your luxurious experience.
The abundance of high-tech features is impressive as well. We found premium items like the standard 14-way adjustable, massaging and ventilated front seats. Audi’s MMI infotainment counts with an eight-inch central screen. For audiophiles, there is a premium Bang & Olufsen Advanced sound system, which has 19 speakers.
The Bottom Line
The A8 is a flawless competitor in its class and the decision is more about tastes and preferences in brands. It’s for you if you love German breed and if you have money to spare. You will not like the fuel efficiency and the minimal cargo space that it offers.
Starting price at US$81,500.
